Prudence and the Crow. Est 2013.
Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: Who are you?

A:

We are Prudence and the Crow. We've worked together online for over twenty years, and believe wholeheartedly in the power of the Internets to enable the greatest geekery and most joyful post.

Q: Where are you?

A:

Near the banks of the Thames, in south-west London, United Kingdom.

Q: What is this thing you are offering here?

A:

A monthly box containing a vintage paperback tailored to your interests, wrapped in a cosy/exciting/fabulous manner, and accompanied by lovely little gifts. The tailoring is much helped by the filling out of our magical questionnaire you will be taken to once you're all set up.

Q: When can I sign up?

A:

You can sign up at any time but in order to receive our next box (dispatch starting ) you must sign up or your subscription will start the following month.

Q: When will I be charged?

A:

You will be charged for your subscription on the day you sign up. If you are signing up for a continuous subscription you will be charged the first payment on the day you sign up and then again every month on that same day thereafter.

NOTE: If you sign up for a continuous subscription between the 2nd and the 13th of the month you will likely be automatically billed twice before you receive your first box. We always ensure you receive the correct number of boxes for the number of payments you have made through the life of your subscription but if you would prefer this not to happen please sign up for your subscription between 13th and last day of the proceeding month.

Q: When can I expect my box?

A:

Boxes start to go into the post on or soon after the 13th of every month. Our next boxes will start to go into the post on .

Subscriptions for a given month close on the first on that month so if you sign up after the 1st your subscription will start the following month.

Dispatch lasts for about a week (there are a lot of you!) and we use Royal Mail for both national and international parcels. Once sent, UK subscribers can expect their box within 1-10 days; international customers within 10-28 days, depending on location. Our boxes do NOT have tracking numbers in any case. Please note: We are sadly no longer able to offer international shipping to new subscribers..

Q: What if I'd like a genre that you don't offer?!

A:

We've chosen those genre options as those are our specialist areas. However, that's not to say we can't accommodate you! We'll do our very best to find something you'll enjoy. Simply subscribe as normal, choosing Random instead of a specific genre, and be sure to fill out the reader questionnaire at the end! Feel free to add as much detail as you like - the more you tell us about what you love, what you'd love to receive, and what you wouldn't, the better the chance we have of sending you a fantastic match!

Q: Have I signed up for a one-off box or a subscription?

A:

Please check your original PayPal receipt for the answer to this one. If you are still in doubt please contact us and we'll let you know. If you bought a one-off box it is just that. You will not be charged again and you will need to sign up again to receive more boxes from us. We'll carry on from where you left off.

Q: Can I re-subscribe?

A:

Of course! We'd love to have you back. We'll continue on from where you left off. To subscribe again please click here.

Q: Are your boxes suitable for children?

A:

Yes and no. Whilst we offer children's fiction as a genre, please bear in mind that our books are vintage and so is their content. Therefore, we highly recommend that you assess both the book and the contents of the box before handing it over to an actual child. Mostly, that option is there for those of you out there who, like us, enjoy reading vintage children's fiction.

Q: What's your favourite book?

A:

Prudence's favourite book is Ludo and the Star Horse, by Mary Stewart. The Crow's favourite book is Gormenghast, by Mervyn Peake.

Q: What if I already have the book you send me?

A:

With any luck, one (or more) of three things:

a) You are reminded, as part of your happy post-opening experience, how much you love said book, and you settle down to re-read it immediately without even having to dig it out of your bookshelves.
b) You think, well now, here's a book I already own! That means I can use this copy as fabulous interior decor!
c) Ooo, brilliant, it's my BFF/partner/sister/tutor's birthday soon and they've never read this amazing thing...GIFTING SORTED.

If you're still desperately unhappy get in touch and we'll see if we can work something out.

Q: What if I don't like the book you send me?

A:

This does happen. Not all books are brilliant to all people. And there are some people in this world that don't like the Lord of the Rings books. Prudence finds this hard to believe, but people tell her it is so. Indeed, some genres (especially sci-fi, in Prudence's affectionate and extensive experience) have made an art form out of the awful novel. With any luck, the reading experience will compensate for the content, and you'll have widened some horizon somewhere. In all cases, we thoroughly recommend reviewing the book in our GoodReads group so that we, and all our subscribers, can enjoy your opinions!

Q: Can I change my genre part way through?

A:

Absolutely! Just let us know which genre you would like to change to. Contact us here letting us know the name on your subscription box and your new selection.

Q: I'm moving. Can I change my address?

A:

Of course! Just let us know your new address. Contact us here letting us know your old address and your new one and we'll do the rest.

Q: Can I cancel my subscription?

A:

You can cancel a monthly subscription at any time by logging into PayPal and managing your automatic payments or you can let us know and we'll do it for you from our end. Subscriptions that have been bought as a one-off payment cannot be cancelled or part-refunded.

Q: Do you ship internationally?

A:

Unfortunately, we are only able to ship to UK addresses. For more information please click here.

Q: Where do the books come from?

A:

All over the place! We collect brilliant and curious books wherever we go, patronising all manner of wonderful secondhand bookshops to provide the best experiences we can. We fully believe in paying a fair price for books from these excellent purveyors and consider doing so part of the joy of providing this service.

Q: What kind of condition are your books in?

A:

Our books are vintage. This means they are at least 20 years old (in most cases) and have been pre-loved. We won't send you anything that's completely falling apart but we do think old books are beautiful so please bear that in mind. Have a quick search around on social media and you'll soon get a feel for what we are offering.

Q: Will the box fit through my letterbox?

A:

Yes! And even better, there's no need to sign for it! Simply go about your daily business, and return home to find your exciting post waiting happily for you on your doormat! Or, wherever your postbox leads to. The box doesn't automatically go for doormats unless gravity leads it that way.
